- (1878-1935)engineer, industrialistBorn in Paris, André Citroën built his first factory in 1915 at quai de Javel, where he produced 55,000 artillery shells per day. After World War I (1919), he undertook there the mass production of automobiles, becoming the first in France to do so. He built new factories at Saint-Ouen, Clichy, and Levallois— suburbs of Paris—and began using the assembly line process. Always interested in transportation (taxis, automobiles), he introduced the first cruising Citroën models (Croisière noire, 1924-25; Croisière jaune, 1931-32).
